Yesterday I had a trip that really made me feel good, it was one of my favorite charters this year. Dustin, Katie, and Donnie showed up dark and early and we motored through the marsh to the MRGO. Donnie was our resident celebrity on board having represented the US in the down hill skiing special olympics. He was no slouch with fishing either, and was pulling in big trout on after another right off the bat! We made a stop at a place 3 days ago I had been catching sheephead and small redfish and this time it was monster trout one after another. Only problem is it came with a SWARM of gnats, that somehow survived this far into the summer. We endured it as long as we could which was only for a little while and I cried uncle. I was doing the Shell Beach shake pretty serious and decided to make a move further outside with thoughts of wind, open water, and gnat free living driving all logical processes. Heh turned out being gnat free and fish free down at the rocks and outside was not in the cards with big chop rolling in. So we decided to head back north and go redfishing in the Lake Robin area. This is when it really got good! Relaxed and pulled into calm water and proceeded to have a blast. I was casting for Donnie until I realized he casted better then I did, then I was just along for the ride. The whole crew was really dialing it in and redfish were hitting the ice at a fast pace. Not huge ones but tasty keepers in the 17-22" range. Dustin caught a nice drag pulling sheephead for the bigfish award, but it did not take Katie long to break it. First with a clump of oysters then with a big 32" redfish! She cast out into the open water on a hunch and WHAM! Donnie caught 2 flounder with one being a SLAB. Then at our last little stop she catches another biggun! But Donnie was holding the best for last and cast up next the grass, cork down, big drag pulling fight, redfish of the DAY! What a way to end it. Awesome trip, with great positive people. They were really a joy to fish with, I was happy the rest of the night. And the crew had a limit of tasty redfish to take down the road with them for their efforts.
