Talk about a GREAT day on the water a couple days ago. Went out with a crew from New Orleans on a charity harvest trip. About once a month we try to get enough fish to hand out 200 free poboys on the streets on New Orleans. This trip was almost enough for an entire giveaway in one haul! Got the guys loaded up and headed straight out into the Sound. Forecast was for 5-10 and 1-2' waves. Ended up with 15-20 and 2-3s... We were not deterred! Just sliced up them waves and headed straight out to the ACTION. From the first stop to the last we were pulling in big mature sheephead, redfish, and drum. With plenty of them hitting the box between sheephead and the younger drum/redfish. Lots of doubles and triples and drag screaming. The 2-3' waves just made it more fun. Down right sporty out there! It was not long before we had the two 94q coolers packed with tasty fish and decided to play around a little. Motored up to a giant flock of birds to find a spectacle of nature unfolding beneath them. A MASSIVE school of bullreds was laying waste to a ball of pogies they had corralled. We watched in wonder as massive reds so thick, the water was colored bronzy red, crashed baits on the surface their backs out of the water they swam so close to the surface. Spend enough time out there and this kind of thing is bound to cross your path. We were really happy to have gotten to witness it. Decided to take the rest of the day to explore what may be going on at Breton Island. Went out there and let the crew see the barrier island while we fished minnows under a corks for trout. No takers... either a little too early or the sand stained water from all the wind was too much for them to feed. GREAT day with a mission accomplished we turned the bow north and took it back towards the dock. Perfect day of fishing; If you have not experienced this springtime ACTION on big fish you are missing out. Sure they are not trout but we will have plenty of time for them in the months to come.
