Had Jason , a friend of my neighbor, and his dad, John, charter me for a day of fishing while some friends from Maine were in town. They wanted to show Joe and Kathy of Maine just how fertile our delta water could be. We had a stiff 25mph east wind to combat but we made it happen out there despite the conditions. Started off in the MRGO canal down near its opening into Breton Sound. Sticking and moving we tried to get out of the dirty water and find something trout could bite in. We put together a box of speckled trout with Jason catching one monster MRGO speck on a shellbank. Action was there but not too fast and furious. There were small fish everywhere we went. We could catch trout on every cast but was hard finding those keepers. One highlight however was Mr.Joe who fished a fly rod the entire time catching a keeper speck on the fly! A first for my boat. After that bite tapered off we hit one little spot near the opening of the spoil canal where I always seem to catch a few keepers and the occasional bullred. Thankfully he was here today as well and Mr.John bowed up on a fish that we instantly knew was a red. Awesome fight captured on video and the fish of the day was brought to the net. Guys were ready for a change of pace as was I, so we moved into the marsh. There was a thunderstorm too close to our usual stomping grounds on the inside so we decided to take it to the dam. After 30 minutes of fishing the dam we had managed to hook two monster fish. First one pulled the hook and second one broke the line. As I type this I am still unsure what they were. The first could be a bull drum or red, or perhaps a Jack. But it was hooked 25' deep on the bottom. And the second was a fish I swear was 80lbs or greater. I felt the fish on the rod because John figured he was hung up it was so heavy. Crazy giant fish at MRGO DAM! Going to have to go back in my spare time and try to solve this riddle. Guys had a great catch of fresh seafood by mid day and it was time to get out of the sun for the Maine crew. They had a great idea for the evening, they took advantage of the "cook your catch" option and brought their fish to Maurepas Foods and let the experts there work their magic. Jason wrote me the next day to say Maurepas hit it out of the park! Fishing was tough in tough conditions but still a great day with wonderful end results.
